Installation

From zero to tracking
in under a minute.

FocusLens installs as an unpacked Chrome extension. No Store listing yet, no one-click install — but also no waiting for review and no $5 developer fee. Here's the whole flow.

1

Download the zip

Grab focuslens-extension.zip from the homepage. Unzip it anywhere on your computer — Desktop works fine.

2

Open Extensions

In Chrome, paste chrome://extensions into the address bar. Toggle Developer mode on (top-right corner).

3

Load unpacked

Click Load unpacked, navigate to the unzipped focuslens folder, and select it.

4

Pin & go

Click the puzzle icon in the toolbar, pin FocusLens, and start browsing. Data shows up in ~15 seconds.

Troubleshooting

Known hiccups, fast fixes.

These are the real questions real users have sent us — with the actual working answer, not corporate support-bot platitudes.

hourglass_empty
I installed it but I don't see any time data.
add

Tracking starts as soon as you browse any HTTP/HTTPS page, but there's a 15-second flush interval before numbers update.

  • Open a website you regularly use, wait 15–30 seconds
  • Click the FocusLens toolbar icon to refresh the popup
  • If still empty after 5 minutes, go to chrome://extensions and click the circular reload arrow on FocusLens

Note: FocusLens doesn't track chrome:// internal pages, local files, or about: URLs by design.

block
Focus Mode isn't blocking a site I added.
add

Two things to check:

  • Focus Mode must be toggled on in the popup — the target icon lights up in gradient colors
  • The domain you added must match the real hostname without www., https://, or trailing slashes. Use reddit.com, not www.reddit.com/

FocusLens uses substring matching, so reddit.com blocks old.reddit.com and new.reddit.com automatically.

Can I sync data between my laptop and desktop?
add

Not automatically — and that's by design. Cloud sync would require servers, which break the privacy promise.

You can manually move data:

  • On device A: Settings → Export as JSON
  • Copy the JSON file to device B (email, AirDrop, USB, whatever)
  • A JSON import feature is on the roadmap — until then, the export serves as a backup

Does FocusLens work offline?
add

Yes, 100%. FocusLens makes no network requests for tracking or analytics — everything runs locally. The one exception is fetching website favicons (those little icons next to domain names), which load from Google's public favicon CDN. If you're offline, favicons just don't appear — tracking continues normally.

category
How do I add a custom category?
add

Right-click the FocusLens icon → Options (or click the ⚙ gear inside the popup). Scroll to Categories.

  • Type a name in "New category name" (e.g., "Client Alpha")
  • Pick a color
  • Click Add category
  • In the new category card that appears, type domains one at a time (e.g., clientdomain.com) and hit Add

Your tracking data updates retroactively — if you had 2 hours on clientdomain.com already tracked as "Other," it instantly reclassifies to "Client Alpha."

My streak went back to zero — what happened?
add

Streaks reset if you miss a day without hitting your daily productivity goal. The streak advances only when "Productivity" category time ≥ your daily goal (default 4 hours). If life happens, the streak starts fresh at 1 on your next goal-hit day — no shame, no penalty beyond the reset.

Pro tip: lower your goal slightly if you're just starting out. A 2-hour goal you hit consistently beats a 5-hour goal you miss three times a week.

web
Does it work on Firefox, Safari, or Arc?
add

Arc, Brave, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi — yes. They're all Chromium-based and use the same extension API. Load unpacked the same way.

Firefox — not yet. Firefox uses Manifest V2 with a different API surface. A Firefox port is planned but not available today.

Safari — not planned in the near term. Safari extensions require Apple Developer account ($99/yr) plus native Xcode wrapping, which fights the "free and simple" goal.

update
How do I update to a new version?
add

Since FocusLens is loaded unpacked (not from the Chrome Web Store), updates are manual:

  • Download the latest zip from the homepage
  • Unzip it, replacing the old folder (or use a new folder and remove the old)
  • Go to chrome://extensions and click the reload arrow on FocusLens

Your data persists through updates because Chrome's local storage is tied to the extension's ID, not the files. Always a good idea to export a JSON backup first, just in case.

Using Focus Mode for deep work blocks
add

Focus Mode is a manual toggle by design — not a schedule. The workflow is: flip it on at the start of a 90-minute deep-work block, flip it off when you're done.

  • Add every site that regularly derails you — Twitter, Reddit, news, YouTube
  • Don't overthink the list — if you notice yourself bargaining with a site, add it
  • Blocked sites redirect to a motivational page with a rotating quote and a "close tab" button

Setting a realistic daily goal
add

The default goal is 4 productive hours. For most knowledge workers this is achievable on a good day but not every day — which is the right calibration.

  • If you're hitting 4h every single day: raise the goal (but most people overestimate their true deep-work capacity)
  • If you're hitting 4h less than once a week: lower to 2–3h. A streak you can maintain beats an ambitious number you can't
  • The goal only counts "Productivity" category time, so adding your client/study tools as a custom category bucket they into "Productivity" counts

Exporting your data for analysis
add

Settings → Your data → Export CSV gives you a flat file with Date, Domain, Total Seconds, Total Minutes columns — perfect for pivoting.

Ideas for what to do with exports:

  • Pivot table in Excel/Sheets: "which days did I work the most on X?"
  • Weekly timesheet generation for freelance clients
  • Feed into a Python notebook for trend analysis
  • Plain backup — keep a weekly copy in case something goes wrong
